Story 13: Personal Support and Disclaimer

There will, inevitably, be difficult content on the site. Voices of the Land is based on a participatory video model, which is basically that people create their own videos and then upload themselves. This model is typically used with video projects that support marginalized communities, where people with video creation supplies bring them into communities and then give them the tools that they can use to create their own content. This model is similar to this website, but it does deviate from that model because we aren’t giving people equipment to use. They can use what they have, if it’s a handheld device, a keyboard on a portable device, a photocopier, and they can do it from their own home. They also have the agency to remove their own content if they become uncomfortable with it being public on the website.

What will you never see on the site, what supports can you see:

According to our privacy and sharing statement, we do have some guidelines on what can be shared and what cannot be shared on the site. Here is what you will not see on the website:

1) Infringes any third party's copyrights or other rights (e.g. trademark, privacy rights, etc.);
2) Contains sexually explicit content or pornography (provided, however, that non-sexual nudity is permitted);
3) Contains hateful, defamatory, or discriminatory content or incites hatred against any individual or group;
4) Exploits minors;
5) Depicts unlawful acts or extreme violence;
6) Depicts animal cruelty or extreme violence towards animals;
7) Promotes fraudulent or dubious business schemes; or violates any law.

We have an approval process where Mukurtu (the website base) admins (the Steering Committee, library admins) need to approve website posts so we can attest that the content is not violating our guidelines. This can happen with or without violating protocols or community sacrality, if the community is closed to the public. This safeguard is there to ensure that our guidelines are maintained. If content violates our community guidelines, then we can remove it from our website and the creator will be notified.
